Four-wheel drive

MAZDA 323 is available also in all-wheel drive option. Additional elements are necessary for the drive of back wheels. The drive of forward and back wheels connects the driveshaft. The driveshaft sets differential of back wheels from which to back wheels two power shafts depart in motion.

The transfer case (intermediate differential) is necessary for compensation of various speed of rotation of forward and back wheels, for example, at turn. The transfer case is executed in the form of a set planetary by a gear wheel with solar and crown gear wheels. Models from 10/90 g of the issue with the turbo engine: The transfer case is equipped with the self-locking viscous coupling which at emergence of a difference of speed of rotation between forward and back wheels automatically connects the back bridge. The small difference in speed is admissible, however the more a difference, the coupling is blocked more thanks to what from back wheels big force is moved to the road. Cars without turbo engine, and also all to 9/90 g of the issue: The transfer case can be blocked by the driver via the switch on the average console. The electric motor the cam coupling which closes the transfer case turns on. Thanks to it the car can freely move on deep snow or dirt if one wheel revolves.

In normal conditions the intermediate differential has to be constantly connected as differently the leading axis at turn is strongly overloaded; besides dynamic characteristics worsen. The transfer case is fixed on the transmission, however has separate filling with oil. Gearbox oils have to be replaced within regular maintenance.

Mechanical transmission: The box is filled with 2,6 l (the turbo engine to 9/89 g of the issue: 3,6 l) of oil for automatic DEXRON II transmissions -18 °C, API the class GL-4, viscosity of SAE 75 W-90 are above.

Transfer case: It is filled with 5,0 liters of gearbox oil of the class API GL-5, viscosity of SAE 90. At temperatures below -18 °C API GL-5 SAE 80W oil is offered.

Differential of the back bridge: It is filled with 0,65 liters of API GL-5, SAE 90 or SAE 80W-90 gearbox oil, this oil also has to be replaced regularly within maintenance. Repair work on differentials has to be performed in a specialized workshop.
