Removal and installation of back brake blocks / brake drum

Cars to 9/89 g of the issue and the station wagon model

1 — the brake drum

To remove details as their numbering. Separate elements of the right and left brakes differ from each other, they should not be mixed.

Removal

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. To change the provision of a disk of a wheel concerning a nave that the balanced wheel could be established in former situation.
  2. To weaken nuts of a wheel of the car standing on the earth.
  3. To lift a back part of the car.
  4. To remove a wheel.
  5. To release the emergency brake.
  1. To straighten a lock plate by means of the hammer and a chisel and to weaken a nave nut.

On the left side the nut of a nave has the left carving, it for easing needs to be rotated to the right (clockwise).


  1. To remove the brake drum, watching at the same time that the hug bearing did not drop out. If the brake drum is not removed, to weaken completely a cable of the emergency brake.
  1. Before removal of returnable springs it is recommended to mark their adjusting situation. It facilitates installation.
  2. It is strong to press a clamping spring and to turn on 90. When pressing to hold a pin behind on a brake board. In the same way to remove a pin on other block.
  3. To cast away a forward block outside and to disconnect springs-4-and-5-.
  1. To remove both brake shoes.

At the removed brake shoes not to press a brake pedal as differently the piston will jump out of the wheel brake cylinder. Installation of the piston see in the Section Repair of the Wheel Brake Cylinder.

  1. To attach by means of the screw-driver a cable of the emergency brake to the adjusting device. To remove the adjusting device.
  1. To remove a boot-5-on the wheel brake cylinder.

At the same time the piston should not be pulled out. To check whether it is damp behind a boot. If necessary to repair the wheel cylinder.

  1. To put on a boot the wheel cylinder.

Installation

It is obligatory to replace all 4 brake shoes even if the limit of wear was reached by only one. To use blocks of one brand. To clear the brake drum and a board of a brake the vacuum cleaner or alcohol. If the wheel brake cylinder damp to replace it. To slightly grease the adjusting device with MoS2 lubricant. To chisel the drums having grooves at the same time always to process both drums. Brake drums can be chiseled to the maximum diameter of 201 mm.


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. To eliminate insignificant roughnesses and traces of a rust with a small emery paper.
  1. To clear six surfaces of contact between brake shoes and a board of a brake and before installation of blocks to cover with a thin layer of heat-resistant lubricant, best of all high-temperature copper paste.
  1. To attach springs to the adjusting device and brake shoes.
  1. Before installation of brake shoes to shift a segment of the adjusting device until it adjoins to a brake board. At the expense of it the distance of blocks is established on the smallest value. For moving of a segment to insert the screw-driver between a finger and a segment and to turn it in the direction of an arrow. Type of a brake from above.
  1. To insert brake shoes at first below, opposite to the wheel cylinder. To install the adjusting device from above between blocks and at the same time to establish blocks on both parties of the wheel cylinder.

Not to load the wheel cylinder only on the one hand, otherwise the piston will be squeezed out on the other hand.

  1. To attach a cable of the emergency brake to the lever.
  1. To establish back and forward blocks on a brake board and to fix by a pin of fastening and a clamping spring. At the same time holding a pin behind, at the same time to press a spring flat-nose pliers and to turn on 90 °.
  1. To check operation of the device of automatic adjustment. For this purpose 2 - 3 times to squeeze out a pedal of a brake (assistant). At the same time the adjusting segment has to move. If it does not occur, so brake shoes were incorrectly established.
  2. To install the adjustment device at the smallest adjustable length.
  3. To install the brake drum and to screw a new nut of a nave.
  4. To adjust a hug bearing side play.

  1. To screw a wheel, at the same time to watch a tag on a nave. To lower the car and to tighten wheel nuts cross-wise with effort of 100 Nanometers.
  2. To adjust the main gap of back brakes several pressing of a pedal of a brake. At the same time in a brake clicks are heard.
  3. To adjust the emergency brake.
  4. To make trial braking at an average speed on the road, free from transport.

Removal

  5. To unscrew a bolt-1-on the brake drum.
  6. To release the emergency brake and to remove the brake drum from a nave. If the brake drum is not removed because of extra earnings, previously it is necessary to weaken completely a cable on the lever of the emergency brake.
  7. Before removal of returnable springs it is recommended to mark their adjusting situation. Thanks to it their installation is facilitated.
  8. To disconnect the top and lower returnable spring by means of the screw-driver or special nippers.
  9. It is strong to wring out a press spring and to turn on 90 °. At an otzhatiya at the same time to hold a pin behind a brake board. In the same way to remove a pin on other brake shoe.
  10. To disconnect a returnable spring from the adjustment device.
  11. To incline brake shoes outside and to remove them.

At the removed brake shoes not to press a brake pedal as differently pistons will jump out of the wheel brake cylinder. To insert pistons, see the Section Repair of the Wheel Brake Cylinder.

  1. To disconnect a cable of the emergency brake from the device of adjustment-11-by means of the screw-driver. To remove the adjustment device.
  2. To remove a boot-5-on the wheel brake cylinder.

At the same time the piston should not be extended. To check whether there is no moisture behind a boot. If necessary to replace the wheel cylinder.


  1. To install a boot on the wheel cylinder.

  1. To attach springs to the adjusting device and brake shoes.
  1. Before installation of brake shoes to shift a segment of the adjusting device until it adjoins to a brake board. At the expense of it the distance of blocks is established on the smallest value. For moving of a segment to insert the screw-driver between a finger and a segment and to turn it in the direction of an arrow. Type of a brake from above.
